FIDIC Activities

Iksan van der Putte
Sustainable Development Task Force

The FIDIC Sustainable Development Task Force (SDTF) has a mission:

  • To further develop and implement the strategy paper on sustainable development, including its action plan.
  • To define possible tasks, including possible management tools, in line with other industries.
  • To establish collaboration with relevant international organizations working towards sustainability.
  • To recommend strategies to facilitate the involvement of member firm in the practice of sustainability.

The SDTF is currently working in all these areas to help our businesses become increasingly engaged in environmental management and sustainable development. Activities will be briefly reviewed before considering the Task Force’s more recent initiatives.

UNEP - ICLEI - FIDIC Urban Environmental Management Systems Training Resource Kit

This Kit, to be officially launched in mid-September, 2001, is seen as the first in a comprehensive set of tools to assist the implementation of environment management concepts in the urban as opposed to industrial context. Meanwhile, the UNEP-ICC-FIDIC Environmental Management Systems Training Resource Kit has been updated and published by FIDIC as a 2nd Edition.

Rio+10 input

FIDIC is acting as a lead partner for the construction industry’s input into the worldwide review of progress in sustainable development that is being prepared for the Rio+10 conference.

Business Guidelines for Sustainable Development in Consultancy Services

FIDIC recognised in the early 1990s that sustainability will increasingly become the most important criteria for project acceptability. As a follow-up to the policy statement Consulting Engineers and the Environment, guidance documents and support tools were developed to facilitate the implementation of environmental management concepts in the consulting engineering industry. However, socio-economic issues now require more attention to keep them in balance with environmental and technological issues. FIDIC acknowledged this trend by publishing the strategy paper Sustainable Development in the Consulting Engineering Industry

Business guidelines have been prepared to assist FIDIC member associations, their member firms and individual professionals implement this sustainability strategy in everyday business practice. The final draft version of the guidelines will be presented and made available for comment under the chapters:
