Sustainable Development - A Challenge for the Engineering Profession was the theme of the FIDIC 1990 Annual Conference. Following the publication of the FIDIC report Engineering Our Future and the strategy paper Sustainable Development in the Consulting Engineering Industry, FIDIC revisited the theme at the FIDIC 2000 Annual Conference in Hawaii under the title Sustainability: The Challenge of the New Millennium. A key premise is that sustainability and the future growth of our society require the consulting engineering industry to assume an expanded leadership role in the development process around the world.

FIDIC 2000 set the scene for the FIDIC 2001 Annual Conference, which is being organised as a special international forum titled Partners in Sustainability. The aim is to develop closer cooperation in sustainability programmes with other organizations. Hawaii identified the key challenges facing tomorrow's generations in preserving a healthy, sustainable built and natural environment. The work is now being carried forward to Montreux by developing, in partnership with key organizations, pragmatic approaches based on social, economic and ecological considerations.

Several international organizations will be collaborating, including the International Academy of Architects and the European International Contractors, on behalf of the Confederation of International Contractors Associations. 

FIDIC 2001, Partners in Sustainability: An International Forum, takes place at the Montreux Palace Hotel in Montreux, Switzerland, on 3 - 5 September 2001, with the Union Suisse des Ingénieurs-Conseils, FIDIC’s Swiss Member Association, acting as host. A unique feature will be specially organized post-conference tours that visit the sites of major trans-Alpine rail tunnels while taking in majestic mountain scenery.
