Social Programme

FIDIC 2005 Beijing offers an exciting and varied social programme. Included
in the participants' and accompanying persons' registrations are the Welcome
Reception, Opening Ceremony, Local Colour Night and Gala Dinner. Extra
tickets can be purchased for these events. Tickets must be purchased for all
other events and tours.
Accompanying persons can be registered and paid for online
and using the offline registration
form, where tickets for optional events, and extra tickets for events
included in the conference and accompanying persons' registrations, can also be
booked and paid for.

Tian'anmen Square is flanked by the Great Hall of the
People, the meeting place of the National People's Congress of China,
and by the Imperial Palace – the Forbidden City, the world's
largest palace complex, that served as the imperial palace in the Ming and Qing Dynasties from 1420 to 1911. |

Temple of Heaven, built in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty and occupying
272 hectares, was where the emperor worshipped and prayed for good harvests. The north part
is round and the south a square, meaning that Heaven is round and the Earth is square. The main buildings are the Hall for the
Praying for Good Harvests, the Round Altar, the Echoing Wall, and the Imperial Vault of Heaven. |

Summer Palace

The Summer Palace, now
called the Imperial Garden Museum, integrates perfectly the essence of Chinese garden
arts. Originally a royal garden and a home for Qing Dynasty emperors, it was
rebuilt and renamed as the Summer Palace in 1888. The Palace's 291 hectares include
Longevity Hill and the Kunming Lake covering three-quarters of the area. |

The Great Wall, running from the east coast to the western desert for 6,400 km, has become a
"must-see" for every visitor to China. It was started 214 BC by Qin Shi Huangdi,
China's first emperor, as a defensive system along the northern border. The Badaling
section near Beijing i mainly dates from the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). |

Ming Tombs |
Ming Tombs - the name given to the mausolea of 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). The
mausolea are perfectly preserved, as are the necropolii of the emperors. Owing
to its long history and the palatial and integrated architecture, the site has a high cultural and historic value. The layout and arrangement of all thirteen
mausolea are very similar but vary in size as well as in the complexity of their structures. |

Yuanmingyuan - the Garden of Perfect Splendor - is renowned for its fabled charms and association with
China's recent history. Extolled as the "Versailles of the East" during
its heyday, the garden was an imperial summer resort, painstakingly built and repeatedly expanded under the personal supervision of five Qing
Dynasty emperors. In 1860, Anglo-French forces sacked and looted Yuanmingyuan, and
burnt it to the ground. |

Lama Temple, the temple for the yellow section of Tibetan Buddhism, houses a 26
metre high Buddha statute made of white sandalwood. It was the Emperor Yongzhen's
residence before he ascended to the throne in the Qing Dynasty. |

Lao She Tea House, named after China's well-know writer Lao She, has interior decoration
which is simple but classic and with a strong Beijing style. It is not only a tea house where you
can sip a wide variety of teas from all over China and savor Beijing snacks
but also a museum of Beijing folk culture. Chinese traditional arts such as
the Peking Opera are performed every night. |
