Archives are unpacked to a product directory (the archives may or may not form part of a collection of product archives). 2.1. Product directories contain: 2.1.1. FileOpen encrypted PDF The restricted access, protected part of the document as a Portable Document File (PDF) in a FileOpen-encrypted format that must be installed. The encrypted PDF file and any unrestricted access part-document PDFs can be accessed using the Acrobat Reader Version 4 or greater (or the full Acrobat Version 4 or greater) for a stated availability period, and printed for a given total number of pages (offline installer version) or a stated number of times (online installer version). 2.1.2. Public directory "PUBLIC" a) User-accessible part-documents If the whole document is divided up into a protected, user- inaccessible part "a" and user-accessible part-documents, then the whole-document will be designated "ab", "abc", "a_c" etc. depending on the number of part-documents "b", "c", etc. These part documents may be combined to give say "bc", "b_d", etc. Each unrestricted-access part-document in a "PUBLIC" directory is supplied in an unencrypted format that can be accessed (text can be copied and pasted) and printed without restriction. Unrestricted PDF files cannot be edited; those in formats such as Word can be edited. b) Forms A "FORMS" directory in "PUBLIC" containing any user-accessible forms taken from the whole document. These forms are supplied in word processor formats (Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, RTF, etc.) with file names designated "f". Users are authorised to edit, copy, print and modify these word-processor formats without restriction up until the end of the whole- document PDF file availability period. Included are PDF versions of forms that can be edited using the full Acrobat program. These PDF forms preserve the layout of the original printed forms and a watermarked with the FIDIC seal. c) Index In earlier verions of the offline install product, an "index.idx" index file with an index directory called "INDEX" was supplied for searching an index of the document on a server. This has been discontinued in the online install versions. Adobe Reader or full Acrobat Versions 4+ with Search capabilities can be installed from the "ACRO" directories found on FIDIC CDs. They are also available online at the www.adobe.com website 2.1.3. Admin directory "ADMIN" a) A Users Agreement "agree.txt". b A "products.txt" file that specifies the contents of the various electronic products that are available from FIDIC. All of the products listed in products.txt may not be included in a collection. But all are available by email or download from the Bookshop. c) This readme.txt file. d) Plug-in installers - Products with manual offline installed encrypted PDFs An access executable "access.exe" that can be executed on the computer on which the encrypted PDF was installed to reset access permissions. It can also be executed on a client computer so that the client can access the encrypted PDF that was installed on another machine (for example, a server). Executing access.exe will require a new Authorization String to be purchased. The user rights will be the same as those for the original installation. A copy of the foClinetInstaller.exe for installing the fOpen32.api plug-in needed to access offline installed encrypted PDFs. - Products with automatic online installed encrypted PDFs A copy of the FileOpenInstaller.exe for installing the FileOpen.api Adobe plug-in needed to access online installed encrypted PDFs. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 3. PROCEDURE The FIDIC Bookshop supplies the following electronic products: - A product directory delivered as a zip or self-extracting zip archive by email or download. Purchasing such a product gives the purchaser the right to obtain access rights that are used to install the encrypted PDF file contained in the directory. - A CD or diskette with product directories. The purchaser copies a product directory from the CD or diskette and an access rights may then need to be purchased to install the encrypted PDF file stored in the directory (Business Edition collections). The CD or diskette will generally also contain freely available support and resource materials. Enterprise and Special Collections delivered on CD have prepaid access rights. 3.1. Product directories 3.1.1. Archive by email or download After you are authorized to receive a single archive or a collection of archives, with each archive containing the various files (as a compressed .zip archive or as a .exe self-extracting archive or installer), you will either download the archive file/s from the FIDIC Bookshop website (by entering your Order Code to access the download page) or receive the file/s by email. The archive/s should be copied to the computer on which you wish to install the encrypted PDF file. In the case of a .zip archive, a utility such as WinZip is used to unpack each zip archive. The .exe archive extracts when you click on it. In both cases, the archive should be unpacked to the computer on which you wish too install the encrypte file. 3.1.2. Directory on CD or diskette Copy a product directory or all or part of a collection of product directories from the CD or diskette to a disk on the computer on which you wish to install the encrypted PDF files. The disk can be either a phyisical disk or a networked virtual disk that is mapped to the computer. 3.2. Encrypted PDF installation 3.2.1. Acrobat installation The whole-document PDF assumes that you have the Adobe Reader Version 4 or later or the full Adobe Acrobat Version 4 or later installed. If this is not the case, please download the Reader from the Adobe website (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html) and install it. The Reader is also supplied on FIDIC CDs in the directory "ACRO". Two versions are supplied (with and without the Search capability). If you are using Versions 5+ of the Reader or Acrobat you will need to allow uncertified plug-ins (the FileOpen plug-in is currently uncertified) in Preferences -> Options -> Certified plug-ins, and restart the Reader. If uncertified plugins are not allowed you receive a message saying that the FileOpen plug-in is not available. 3.2.2. FileOpen Plug-in Installation To install the encrypted PDF file you must: - be logged on to your computer as an administrator with full rights; - have Adobe Reader or Acrobat installed on your computer, and not on a network server. - use a physical hard disk or a virtual networked disk that is mapped to your computer. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 4. AUTOMATIC ONLINE INSTALL (recommended) Before opening an enrypted "_enc.pdf" file,, please make sure that the offlineline FileOpen.api Adobe plug-in is installed. There are several ways to install the plug-in. For Windows, it can be: - copied from ADMIN; - installed by clicking on the FileOpenInstaller.exe in the product directory; - installed online at http/://www1.fidic.org/bookshop/fo/install. Once the plug-in is installed, go online and click on the document. For Acrobat and Reader 5, the protected document will open and close immediately to save the accesss rights. For Acrobat and Reader 6+, the protected document will remain open. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 5. MANUAL OFFLINE INSTALL 5.1. Introduction Generally, speaking manual offline installation of encrypted PDFs is being phased out in favour of the simpler automatic online install. For manual offline install, when you click on the encrypted .exe file called .exe found in the product directory (for single products and Business Collection), or on an "access.exe" (for Enterprise collections). The FileOpen installer will do the following: - copy the fOpen32.api plug-in to the Acrobat plug-in folder, or to the Acrobat Reader plug-in folder (usually found at PROGRAM FILES/ADOBE/ACROBAT x/READER/PLUG-INS); - write a registry entry "FileOpen" in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry under SOFTWARE; - copy the encrypted PDF file to the product directory (for .exe); - self-destruct the .exe installer. Before executing the FileOpen installer, it is important that Acrobat Reader is correctly installed so that the fOpen32 plug-in is copied to the correct plug-in directory. If you are updating the Acrobat Reader it is important that you uninstall earlier versions before installing a new Version. Uninstall is launched at START->STETTINGS->CONTROL PANELS-> ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. You can check that the plug-in is correctly installed by seeing if FilOpen is listed in the Help - > About Plugins in Acrobat 3 or in Help - > About Adobe Acrobat Plugins for Reader 4, 5 and 6. Clicking on .exe executable file launches the FileOpen installer that installs the encrypted PDF file. An installer window will appear and you are asked to enter a nine-character long Authorization String and to click the "OK" button. This allows installation to continue. The installer will delete automatically. ............................................................. 5.2. Obtaining the Authorization String The nine-character long installer Authorization String can be obtained as follows: - product archive that has been purchased: string obtained either online or offline; - directory that is copied from a FIDIC CD or diskette: string purchased either online or offline. ............................................................. 5.3. Product archive 5.3.1. Archive purchased online - Obtaining the Authorization String online a) automatic submission During the FileOpen installation, clicking on the button "Connect Now and Order Online" in the FileOpen installer window launches your web browser which connects to the FIDIC Bookshop website. The ProductID and an Input String are submitted automatically. Go to the section "Payment Completed" and enter the Order Code that you received when you purchased the product. Submitting the Order Code returns a nine-character long Authorization String. Copy this string to the installer window, and click "OK" to complete installation. b) manual submission The Input string can be submitted manually by connecting to your account page on the Bookshop website. Your account is accessible via http://www.fidic.org/bookshop/account, and you are asked to submit your Username and Email address. Then select the order that corresponds to the product you wish to install. If the product has been successfully received by email or by download, the account page will show an input box for submitting the Input String. You can only submit three different Input Strings to calculate an Authorization String, so please ensure that you submit the correct string. - Obtaining the Authorization String Ooffline You can obtain an Authorization String by contacting the Bookshop at fax (+41 22 799 49 01), telephone (+41 22 799 49 05), cell/mobile (+41 79 298 96 66) or email (fidic.pub@fidic.org. In this case, please supply the ProductID specified in the installer window (a 10-digit long number starting with 10094) and your 9-character long Input String. 5.3.2. Archive purchased offline - Obtaining the Authorization String online a) automatic submission A user account is generally created when you purchase offline so you can obtain an Authorization String using automatic submission (see above). b) manual submission A user account is generally created when you purchase offline so you can obtain an Authorization String using manual submission (see above). - Obtaining the Authorization String offline You can obtain an Authorization String by contacting the Bookshop at fax (+41 22 799 49 01), telephone (+41 22 799 49 01), cell/mobile (+41 79 298 96 66) or email (fidic.pub@fidic.org. In this case, please supply the ProductID specified in the installer window (a 10-digit long number starting with 10094) and your 9 character long Input String. 5.3.3. Directory copied from a FIDIC CD or diskette - Obtaining the Authorization String online a) automatic submission During the FileOpen installation, clicking on the button "Connect Now and Order Online" in the FileOpen installer window launches your web browser which connects to the FIDIC Bookshop website. The ProductID and an Input String are submitted automatically. Go to the section "Payment Required". You are urged to select "Immediate Payment by Credit Card". In this case you enter a Username and an Email address. These logon details can be for an account that already exists. If they are unknown to the system, a new user account will be created. If you choose not to receive an invoice, submitting a Username and Email will transfer your directly to WorldPay. Successful processing of your credit card payment will result in an Authorization String being issued. If you choose not to pay immediately online by credit card, or if you require an invoice, you will be routed through the full Bookshop purchasing system. This allows you to pay "Later by Credit Card" or "On Receipt of Invoice". In both cases, an account will be created and you will be informed when payment has been processed and you are authorized to obtain the Authorization String, using either automatic submission or manual submission (see above). b) manual submission You can manually submit your Input String to purchase an Authorization String by navigating to the FIDIC CD window on the Bookshop homepage at http://www.fidic.org/bookshop. You are asked to select the product you wish to install, and to submit your input string. You then proceed through the Bookshop purchasing system. Once again, if you "Pay Immediately by Credit Card" you will be issued with an Authorization String immediately. - Obtaining the Authorization String offline You can obtain an Authorization String by contacting the Bookshop at fax (+41 22 799 49 01), telephone (+41 22 799 49 05), cell/mobile (+41 79 298 96 66) or email (fidic.pub@fidic.org. In this case, please supply the ProductID specified in the installer window (a 10-digit long number starting with 10094) and your 9 character long Input String. ............................................................. 5.4. Encrypted PDF access permissions Upon submitting your Authorization String in the FileOpen installer window and clicking "GO", installation of the whole-document PDF file will complete, and access permissions established on your computer. Encryption ensures that the whole-document PDF file that you installed can only be used on the computer on which it was installed for the specified availability period and used to print a specified number of pages. The number is given on your Bookshop account page. Allowing a certain number of pages to be printed has the advantage that users can: - select which pages to print; - reset the number of printed pages by executing the setup executable found in the product directory and purchasing a new Authorization String (i.e., it is unnecessary to receive the entire archive again, or to copy an entire directory from a CD or diskette). Encrypted document access permissions are as follows: a) full access (Business edition or part of a Business collection or a full-access Enterprise collection): - text cannot be selected and copied; - browsing limited to a six-month access period (single document and Business collectons), or to 12 months (Enterprise collections). - printing limited to a preset number of pages (approximately 10 times the whole-document for single document and Business collections; 20 times the average document for Enterprise collections). b) browse only (browse-only Enterprise colection) - unlimited browsing for a calendar year. Unencrypted document access permissions are as follows: - text can be selected and copied; - unlimited browsing; - unlimited printing. ............................................................. 5.5. Server-client mode If you wish to allow users to access the encrypted document PDF from other machines, you should install the encrypted PDF on a server and execute the "access.exe" executable on the client machine. The Bookshop supplies two Authorization Strings with each purchase to allow client-server mode operation. Successful access setup will mean that the client can print the same total number of pages of the encrypted PDF file as were set up for the original installation. This is because FileOpen establishes user access rights on each computer on which the installation is carried out. When you run the access.exe on a client, you will be asked to input an Authorization String. Strings are assigned as follows: - Business edition or collection: the product is delivered with the right to obtain a single Authorization String. If you run "access.exe" on a client, you will therefore need to purchase a new Authorization String. - Enterprise collection: the product collection is delivered with the right to obtain one or five Authorization Strings, where each string allows either full access or browse-only access to all the encrypted documents in the collection. ............................................................. 5.6. Resetting access rights for the whole-document PDF You can reset the access rights to access an encrypted PDF by executing the "access.exe" executable. If you have not changed your computer's system you can use the same Authorization String as for the initial installation (the string is stored on your account page in the Bookshop website at http://www.fidic.org/bookshop/account). If you have changed the system you will need to contact the Bookshop for a new Authorization String. The Bookshop will generally only provide a new Authorization String in exceptional circumstances. ............................................................. 5.7. Problem solving 5.7.1. Requirements When you install the offline FileOpen-encrypted PDF file please ensure that: - Acdobe Reader 4+ or the full Acrobat 4+ or is installed on your computer (not on a network server) before you start installation. - That you enter a 9-character long Authorization String in uppercase without blanks or spaces. - You have copied or extracted the product directory to your computer's hard disk or to a network disk that is mapped to your computer. - You are logged on as an administrator. The best account is the "computer name (this computer)" account. - For Acrobat Reader 5, you allow uncertified plug-ins (see above). 5.7.2. Installation problems The most common instalation problem is that the Reader or Acrobat does not open the encrypted PDF file. This generally arises because the FileOpen installer has not copied the fOpen32 Acrobat plugin to the active Reader or Acrobat plug-ins directory. This can be checked in Reader or Acrobat, under "Help". Check that FileOpen is listed under "third-party plugins". If it is not, please copy fOpen32.api from the FIDIC CD or product directory to the plugin directory (usually at c:\program files\adobe\acrobat\reader\plug-ins). If the document still does not open, try copying the plugin to all of your Acrobat plugins directories. For Windows, these are generally found at PRoGRAM FLES -> ADOBE -> ACROBAT X -> READER -> PLUG_INS. 5.7.3. Reinstalling If an encrypted PDF does not print, it may be necessary to reinstall the document. This is often the case if an installation is carried out with Reader 3 or Acrobat 3 installed, and the user then installs Reader or Acrobat 4+. To reinstall: - Make sure that Adobe Reader or Acrobat 4+ is installed on your computer; - Recopy the product directory to your computer's hard disk (you may need to ask the Bookshop for a new archive if you do not have a CD or diskette). - Make sure that the fOpen32.api plug-in is in your active Acrobat plugi-ins folder. If it is not there, copy the plug-in from the product directory. - Delete the FileOpen Registry entry by going START->RUN- >type "regedit" and under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, delete "FileOpen". - Reinstall the encrypted PDF by executing the whole- document .exe file once again. You will need to submit the Authorization String as before. If you are installing on the same computer and the system has not been changed, the string will be same as for the initial installation (it is available on your account page). - Open the whole-document PDF from the Reader or Acrobat file menu, or click on the PDF file. - Switch your printer on and off after installing the whole-document, PDF and before you open the Reader or Acrobat. 5.7.4. Printing problems Encrypted PDF files are sometimes very large and can cause problems for poor-quality printers with insufficient memory. FIDIC documents rely on downloading PostScript Type 1 fonts in order to ensure that documents are identical to the original printed version, and to avoid problems arising from mixing portrait and landscape formats. If you have printer problems, please try the following: - Ask the FIDIC Bookshop to send the latest version of the FileOpen fOpen32.api plugin. This version is always available on the Bookshop website. Please copy this the plug-in to your plugins folder, overwriting the existing plugin. - If you are printing a PDF file to a non-PostScript printer with a small amount of RAM (for example, 2 MB), the printer may run out of memory. If this occurs, you have three options: a) In the Reader or Acrobat Print dialog, select Properties and change the print resolution to something lower, like 300 dpi; b) Upgrade the memory in the printer. c) Use the "Print as Image" setting in the Reader or Acrobat Print dialog. - If Reader or Acrobat fails to print a file correctly, try selecting the "Print As Image" option in the Reader or Acrobat Print dialog. This option, which tells the Reader or Acrobat to send a 300 dpi raster image to the printer rather than vector art, may enable troublesome files to print. This option is not, however, recommended for general purpose use because it may make many PDF files print slower. - Set Reader or Acrobat to "Print TrueType fonts as Bitmaps", not outline (especially for HP LaserJet and DeskJet printers). 5.7.5. Reader or Acrobat version 5+ Remember to allow uncertified plug-ins (Edit -> Preferences -> Options -> Certified Plug-ins), and restart the Reader. 5.7.6. Blank pages Users who have installed the Version 1 fOpen32.api Acrobat plugin will see blank pages. Please ensure that the Version 2 or a Version 3 plug-in is present in the Acrobat Reader or Acrobat plug-in folder. Version 2 is about 196 kB in size, and Version 3 about 204 kB, as opposed to about 164 kB for Version 1. 5.7.7. Printers not displayed in Reader 5+ or Acrobat 5+ All installed printers may not appear in the drop-down print menu in Reader or Acrobat 5 or 6. Please ensure that the printer you want to use is set as the default printer. 5.7.8. Print metering For controlled access encrypted PDF documents, the "print metering" window on the Reader or Acrobat print dialogue window gives the number of print points remaining. One print equals one printed page. If the print meter is set to 1 or 0 immediately after installation, please obtain the latest version of the FileOpen fOpen32 plug-in and copy it to your plug-ins directory. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 6.
