ISO activities
ISO/TC 176/SC 2 (website) is responsible for developing the ISO 9001 and 14000 family of standards. Current activities include:
  • updating of ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 (first Committee Drafts by mid-2006);
  • database of sector documents is being developed to prevent the proliferation of quality management system standards (see March 2005 list of QM system related documents, PDF)
  • improved alignment between 9001 and 14001: 9001 uses the "Process Approach", while 14001 uses a modified Deming cycle of "Plan-Do-Check-Act".  A task group has recommended  a common "systems" based structure based on: Context of the organization, Leadership, Support, Operations, Performance evaluation,& Improvement. Concurrent revisions of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 may start in 2008
  • ISO survey of QM certificates.

Member Association programmes
 
  • South Africa

Requires member firms to implement a quality management (QM) system by 2006. The association itself became ISO 9001 QM certification in January 2004 and, or smaller firms, has developed a QM training programme within the SAACE School of Consulting Engineering and published an advisory note Implementing and maintaining a QMS (www.saace.co.za) which draws upon FIDIC's Quality Management in the consulting engineering industry collection (see FIDIC.org/bookshop).

  • Netherlands

ONRI has received 9001 QM certification and established a vigorous programme in collaboration with a service provider (Spekkink C&R) to help smaller firms establish QM systems. A description of the ONRI-Spekkink programme is available online (PPT). It is based on an implementation guide developed by  Spekkink C&R (October 2003 draft available from ONRI, in Dutch only) which itself is based on the Netherlands Standard BRL 9990:2001 (ISO 9001: 2001 for architects and consulting engineering firms).
